Longtime Coach Retires; New Coach Takes Reins
A new era begins for NAU football on Saturday as the Lumberjacks open the 2023 season against Lincoln University. The game marks the debut of new head coach Chris Ball, who takes over for longtime coach Jerome Souers, who retired after 18 seasons at the helm.
Ball Brings Extensive Experience
Ball comes to NAU after serving as the defensive coordinator at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He has also held coaching positions at the University of Arizona, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Wyoming.
Lincoln Presents Stiff Test
Lincoln University, located in Jefferson City, Mo., is a Division II school that competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). The Blue Tigers finished 6-5 last season and return several key players, including quarterback Malik Grove and running back Keontez Lewis.
NAU Looks to Build on Strong Finish
NAU finished last season with a 5-6 record, including a 4-1 mark in its final five games. The Lumberjacks return several key players, including quarterback RJ Martinez and wide receiver Hendrix Johnson.

The game will be played at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Arizona. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. MST.
